QR Code Marketing Hits the Mainstream
Although a relatively mature technology, Quick Response QRCodes have only recently been recognised as a viable marketing tool. Commonly used as a way for hardware manufacturers to label and inventory stock and parts, QR Code Marketing has instead changed the barcode into a powerful advertising tool.
Using square matrix barcodes placed strategically on brochures or other printed materials, QR Code Marketing relies on users scanning the code with their smartphone camera. The user is then redirected to a website of your choice for more information about a product or service directly from their mobile handset.
QR Code Marketing solves a number of the issues associated with product launches or sales by reducing the effort required by the customer to find out more. Commonly a brochure arrives through the post directing the recipient to particular website address if they wish to know more. The potential customer then has to either memorise the address or keep hold of the brochure until they are able to access a computer, both of which are potentially inconvenient. QR Code Marketing however allows the marketer to send exactly the same brochure to exactly the same recipients, but in place of the website address is printed a QR Code which when scanned by the customer with their smartphone directs them automatically and immediately to the same website.
This reduction in effort on behalf of the customer also has some benefits for the marketer. By removing the need to remember a website address, the brand no longer need locate a unique and memorable website address, which are becoming increasingly rare; the website address is replaced by a barcode so the customer never actually sees it, so virtually anything can be used instead. Where customers currently struggle to try and remember whether your company's website is a .co.uk or a .com, by simply scanning the qrcode, the conundrum is resolved effortlessly.
And because QR Code Marketing works on the principle of immediate availability, a customer scanning a 2d barcode is presented with all the information they require to make an immediate purchase decision. Studies about QR Code Marketing have discovered that by making a product more immediately accessible, the customer is far more likely to make a purchase straight away.
QR Code Marketing is also extremely flexible thanks to its reliance on traditional printing technology. Although usually found in a small square format, QR Marketing Codes can be scaled upwards without limits, allowing them to be used on billboard advertising campaigns - the code can be scanned by passing travellers, again removing much of the need for the customer to remember the brand name or website address until they get home. QR Codes are now starting to appear on buses, bus shelters and train platforms as marketers grasp the potential benefits of the medium in large format settings. Similarly QR Code Marketing methods have also spread to print advertisements with barcodes acting as a leader for businesses; scanning the code takes the customer to an online brochure of additional products and services.
Marketing Companies are at last realising the value in QR Codes and these ubiquitous 2 bar codes are being adopted by service based business to foster word of mouth and referrals. Word of Mouth, reviews or ratings play an important part in consumer buying decisions with business week saying that more than 70% of consumers cite recommendations as a purchase driver. To increase market share businesses need to learn how to amplify word of mouth especially in residential areas and close communities where they already have an active presence. Although we live in a rapidly digital world it is often offline conversations that lead to the majority of new business. If you are looking for a gardener, plumber, or decorator you will often turn to family members or neighbours for advice and referrals. QR Codes can be used to tap in to word-of-mouth and amplify it.Many savvy businesses have used QR Codes in conjuction with online videos to target customers and link the offline world with digital marketing.
The problem with QR Code Marketing at the moment is that many people regard it as a gimmick and that's predominantly due to to businesses not utilising the full potential of QR Code Marketing. Businesses do not realise that in order to change people behaviour they must offer something in return.
